OpenAI has announced the launch of its most capable model, GPT-4, which will be rolled out to API users starting today. Developers are invited to join a live demo of the model at 1 pm Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) on March 14th, where they can see its advanced reasoning capabilities and broader general knowledge in action.

OpenAI GPT-4

According to OpenAI, GPT-4 can solve difficult problems with greater accuracy, making it an essential tool for professionals and academics alike. The model's capabilities and limitations have been detailed in a blog post, which includes evaluation results and examples of what early customers have built on top of the model.

Creativity with GPT-4: More Creative and Collaborative Than Ever

With GPT-4, OpenAI has developed a more creative and collaborative model that can generate, edit, and iterate with users on creative and technical writing tasks, such as composing songs or writing screenplays. It can also learn a user's writing style for a personalized experience.

Visual Input: GPT-4 Now Accepts Images and Generates Captions and Analyses

GPT-4 can now accept images as inputs, expanding its capabilities beyond text-based tasks. It can generate captions, classifications, and analyses based on the visual content provided.

Longer Context with GPT-4: Handling over 25,000 Words for Extended Conversations and Analysis

One of the biggest advancements in GPT-4 is its capability to handle over 25,000 words of text, making it ideal for long form content creation, extended conversations, and document search and analysis. This feature sets GPT-4 apart from its predecessors, opening up new possibilities for applications that require a larger context.

Developers can sign up for the API Waitlist to gain rate-limited access to the GPT-4 API, which uses the same ChatCompletions API as GPT-3.5-Turbo. OpenAI will start inviting some developers today and gradually scale up availability and rate limits to balance capacity with demand.

For priority access, developers can contribute model evaluations to OpenAI Evals that get merged, helping improve the model for everyone. ChatGPT Plus subscribers will get access to GPT-4 on with a dynamically adjusted usage cap, while API access will still be through the waitlist.

Pricing for GPT-4 will start at $0.03 per 1K prompt tokens for an 8K context window and $0.06 per 1K completion tokens. For the 32K context window, pricing will start at $0.06 per 1K prompt tokens and $0.12 per 1K completion tokens.

The live demo of GPT-4 will be hosted by Greg Brockman, co-founder, and President of OpenAI, who will showcase the model's capabilities and the future of building with the OpenAI API.
