In a press conference held on Thursday, June 3, Albay 2nd District Representative Joey Sarte-Salceda expressed that Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte will be running for president in the 2022 Presidential Election.

Salceda’s statement was based on the SMS conversation he had with Mayor Sara Duterte herself. Mayor Sara Duterte is not only the chairperson and founder of “Hugpong ng Pagbabago,” one of the political alliances in the Philippines that started as a regional political party in Davao City, but also a daughter of the present Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

“In our exchange of texts with Mayor Inday Sara, she left no doubt that she has crossed the Rubicon, it is 100% certain that she is running in 2022. She did not have to agonize over it because she knows she is capable. She is both tough and right. If ever she needs help, she can count on my friendship and loyal advice,” said Salceda to the press.

Mayor Sara Duterte said that her plan to run for 2022 presidential race is an inspired personal decision and she won’t chase popularity or prefer to become a president just because she is being endorsed by a political group or influenced by anybody.

There are negative sentiments among Filipinos about the candidates that will possibly run in the 2022 Presidential Election that are not allies of the current Duterte administration. It is confirmed that President Rodrigo Duterte will only serve his term until 2022, and he has no plans of staying longer than that. Fair enough, it is safe to presume that this situation likely influenced Mayor Sara Duterte’s intent or plan to run for president next year. However, we are yet to hear her official statement on this matter.

The other candidates that are reportedly eyeing for presidential position in 2022 are former Vice President Jejomar Binay and Senator Grace Poe. Results of recent surveys conducted by public opinion polling bodies in the country such as Pulse Asia and Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed that Binay and Poe are tough contenders for presidential race.

Meanwhile, political analysts believe that Mayor Sara Duterte will most likely be elected into the post of president next year considering her stint as Davao City Mayor among other factors, not to mention she has all the support of his father President Rodrigo Duterte.
