The Department of Health (DOH) announced on Tuesday, June 16, 2021, that the Filipino people could remove their face shields when outdoors due to low risk of transmission of COVID-19 in open areas, however, wearing of face shields is still required when indoors as a preventive measure against the deadly virus.

“Pero ‘pag nasa outside naman, kasi alam naman natin ang risk of transmission is very low, at lalong lalo na kapag naglalakad ka lang sa kalye o kaya nagtatrabaho ka, kasi makaka-affect ‘yung moist nito so puwede niyo tanggalin ‘yan,” Health Undersecretary Leopoldo Vega said in an interview with the press.

The DOH is a government agency in the Philippines tasked with promoting health standards in the country. This announcement was made to address the problem faced by many Filipino workers or laborers who find it difficult to work while wearing their face shields as it causes distraction to them.

It can be recalled that the requirement to wear face shield was implemented since the early days of COVID-19 pandemic. Face shields provide an added layer of safety to an individual wearing it as it can prevent the spread of COVID-19 disease that according it studies could be transmitted through contact with people’s saliva who are positive of COVID-19 regardless if symptomatic or asymptomatic.
