Miss Universe Philippines Rabiya Mateo looked stunning like a Victoria’s Secret model as she walked in her PH flag-inspired national costume during the 69th Miss Universe National Costume competition held at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida on Friday, May 14, 2021.

Rabiya wowed the judges and the crowd with her national costume that was designed by the late renowned Pinoy international designer Rocky Gathercole.

“This outfit is inspired by the Philippine flag. The blue represents royalty, red stands for the courage and strength for an independent woman and yellow, the color of sun and stars, symbolizes freedom to choose whoever you want to be,” the pageant host commented while Rabiya slays on stage.

“I feel like I’m a Victoria’s Angel right now,” the Ilongga-ride said during a backstage interview.

However, skeptic fans expressed their disappointment after Rabiya walked the stage without the headpiece crafted by Manny Halasan.

Shortly after the event, Rabiya went live on Instagram to explain her side while being emotional and in tears. She apologized to all her fans for the disappointment and expressed gratitude for the continued support.

“I’m sorry kung na-disappoint man kayo sa akin. I know na I did my best, I even cut my finger and ‘yung stockings ko punong-puno na din ng dugo, but I kept fighting,” tearful Rabiya said during her live on Instagram.

According to Jonas Gaffud, creative director of MU Philippines, the feathered wings weigh 21 kilos which were already too heavy to carry for a 24-year-old beauty queen. The decision not to make Rabiya Mateo wear the headpiece was made in order for her to walk well during the competition and also to avoid injury.
